Uber stripped of its licence to work in London after being declared unfit to operate

Image
London's transport authority has stripped Minicab app Uber  of its licence to work in the capital of England. This was announced by Transport for London (TFL) today, and the reasons given were that Uber is not fit and proper to operate due to concerns over public safety, and also their approach to reporting criminal offences.  A petition with 100,000 signatures was submitted to TfL, calling on Uber to improve workers' rights or 'get out of London' ahead of the licence decision. They are now barred working in London after their current licence expires on September 30. 'TfL considers that Uber's approach and conduct demonstrate a lack of corporate responsibility in relation to a number of issues which have potential public safety and security implications.'

North Korea may consider H-bomb test in Pacific, Kim calls Trump 'deranged'

SEOUL/NEW YORK (Reuters) - North Korea said on Friday it might test a hydrogen bomb over the Pacific Ocean after U.S. President Donald Trump vowed to destroy the reclusive country, with leader Kim Jong Un promising to make a "mentally deranged" Trump pay dearly for his threats. Kim did not specify what action he would take against the United States or Trump, with whom he has traded insults in recent weeks. South Korea said it was the first direct statement of its kind by a North Korean leader. However, Kim's foreign minister, Ri Yong Ho, said in televised remarks North Korea could consider a hydrogen bomb test of an unprecedented scale over the Pacific Ocean. Ri, who was talking to reporters in New York ahead of a planned address later this week, also said he did not know Kim's exact thoughts.

Is the U.S. Overdue for a Catastrophic Earthquake? These Cities Are Most at Risk

Image
The likelihood that the U.S. will see a catastrophic earthquake within the next 30 years is very high — and it’s not just the West Coast that’s at risk, experts say. Seismologists have long warned that the U.S. is “overdue” for an earthquake, because a catastrophic one has not occurred in the U.S. since about 1989, when the Loma Prieta earthquake killed at least 63 people in California, said Robert Yeats, a geology professor at Oregon State University. The most destructive earthquake the U.S. has ever seen was the 7.9-magnitude “Great San Francisco Eart

Image
This is the dramatic moment an RAF drone operated by pilots was used to stop a public execution staged by Islamic State. The footage released for the first time shows crowds of civilians being forced at gunpoint to gather in a Syrian town to watch an execution. As the IS fighters prepared to carry out the execution, a Reaper drone operated by pilots 2,000 miles away at RAF Waddington in Lincolnshire, unleashes its deadly arsenal, killing a sniper keeping watch on a roof nearby. The IS fighters were unable to continue with the barbaric killing after this as the terrified crowds scattered in panic. The Ministry of Defence last night released the first footage from inside the Qatar military HQ of UK personnel in action against Islamic State to illustrate operations in the warzone. The MoD said it could not target jihadis on the ground directly in the May attack because civilians could have been caught up in the blast. By taking out the sniper, it forced the

Electricity: 2,000 Mega-watts Generated Not Distributed To Nigerians

Two thousand mega watts of electricity generated into the national is not distributed to consumers, according to Mr. Louis Edozien, Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Power, Works and Housing. “The national grid produces about 6,600 mega-watts of electricity from the 750,33KV trading points, but less than 4,600 mega-watts get distributed to the consumers,” Edozien said on Monday in Jos. Edozien, who spoke at the opening of the 3rd National Council On Power (NACOP) meeting, attributed the situation to inadequate distribution lines and distribution sub-stations. “Most of the Distribution Companies (DISCOs) do not have adequate distribution lines and distribution sub-stations; we have discussed the need to acquire more of these facilities so as to boost supply to customers,” he said. While noting that much funds were needed to procure more distribution lines, he regretted that the DISCOs were a bit cash-trapped following most consumers’ inability to pay their electr

Who Actually Owns Land In Nigeria?

Image
This happened a while back. I think I was in Primary five at the time. My dad told me of how we used to own the property behind our house; demarcated by a fence. I remember wondering how exactly a person can own something and then not own it anymore. I asked if he had sold it to someone else. This was the only logical reason I could come up with. He said he hadn’t but that the property was just taken from us. This got me thinking about how exactly property is owned in Nigeria. Precisely, what do you have to do to fully own property (land as it is popularly known) in Nigeria? In fact, can you fully own property in Nigeria? When there are issues pertaining to ownership of property in Nigeria, how are they resolved? What steps do you take?

However, leaders of the National Union of Banks, Insurance and Financial Employees, NUBIFIE, said members may not effectively join the strike today because the union just concluded its delegates conference weekend, warning, however, that members would fully join should the strike persist. But the Nigerian Labor Congress, NLC, and Trade Union Congress, TUC, insisted yest

The world will end on September 23, Christian numerologists claim

Image
A Christian numerologist claims that the world will end next Saturday, September 23rd, when a planet will, supposedly, collide with Earth. According to David Meade, verses in Luke 21:25 to 26 are the sign that recent events, such as the recent solar eclipse and Hurricane Harvey, are signs of the apocalypse. The verses read: "25: There will be signs in the sun, moon and stars. On the earth, nations will be in anguish and perplexity at the roaring and tossing of the sea. People will faint from terror, apprehensive of what is coming on the world, for the heavenly bodies will be shaken.' "'26: Men’s hearts failing them for fear, and for looking after those things which are coming on the earth: for the powers of heaven shall be shaken.' Sept. 23 is a date that was pinpointed using codes from the Bible, as well as a "date marker" in the pyramids of Giza in Egypt. Meade's views are not endorsed by Roman Catholic, Protestant

If you consider the reasons why national parks were created and why countries all over the world have national parks, those are special areas where aspects of the country are considered very important and deserving of preservation for posterity. They also include important monuments. National parks are very serious establishments and are held sacrosanct. They are not places to go and play or perturb the environment. Nigeria national parks were established on these same foundations.  Most of the places we call national parks today were already existing as forest

Harvey And Irma: This Is How Hurricanes Get Their Names

Image
The late summer news has been dominated by hurricanes in the Caribbean and the Gulf of Mexico: first there was Hurricane Harvey, which caused devastating flooding in the US city of Houston, Texas, and now Hurricane Irma has wheeled through the Caribbean and will strike Florida over the weekend. One of the questions that have arisen has concerned the naming of the hurricanes. Why Harvey? Why Irma? The task of naming the storms falls upon the World Meteorological Organisation, the highest authority of weather experts in the world, who meet on a regular basis to discuss the patterns of weather and the effects that extreme weather have. They have created zones in which regional organisations under their auspices pick the names: Atlantic hurricanes such as Harvey and Irma are named by the United States National Hurricane Center. When they name hurricanes and tropical storms, they go through a list of accepted names, both male and female, before choosing one. They begin at A

All of Barbuda's 1,800 residents have been evacuated and more than 95 per cent of its structures have been damaged after the ferocious storm hit its shores last week. Many of Barbuda's residents were relocated to Antigua, which did not suffer as much damage. Barbuda's relocated residents are now living in cramped conditions in Antingua's government buildings and nursing homes.

File Photo Motorists plying Enugu-Onitsha dual carriage are going through difficulties due to the bad state of a section of the road, it was gathered. 25 kilometres of the highway from Umunya in Oyi Local Government Area to Ukpo in Dunukofia Local Government Area of Anambra, have been washed away by rain. Also affected is the portion of the highway from Ukpo to Amawbia near Awka, and other parts with deep potholes due to high volume of oil tankers and other articulated vehicles using the road. The situation has forced car owners to divert through Umunya-Nteje road, using a belly bridge constructed during the civil war, where representatives of Umunya and Nteje collect N50 levy on every vehicle that pass through. Mr. John Okwuosa, a commercial driver, said that he prefer to pay the levy than go through the failed section of the highway, to save his vehicle from damage. “On two occasions within one month, my bus broke down on Umunya-Nteje end of the Enugu
