Russia expels 755 US diplomats in response to sanctions

Russian President Vladimir Putin has expelled 755 US diplomatic staff in response to the sanctions placed on them by the US, adding that Moscow could consider additional measures against Washington as a response to new U.S. sanctions approved by Congress. Moscow ordered the United States on Friday to cut hundreds of diplomatic staff and said it would seize two U.S. diplomatic properties after the U.S. House of Representatives and the Senate overwhelmingly approved new sanctions on Russia. The White House said on Friday that U.S. President Donald Trump would sign the sanctions bill. Putin said in an interview with Vesti TV released on Sunday that the United States would have to cut its diplomatic and technical staff by 755 people by Sept. 1. Where Is Your President? CNN Asks Nigerians

American news network, CNN, has mocked Nigeria, asking where is President Muhammadu Buhari. The Nigerian president has not been in the country for over two months and the news television in a query on its website on Sunday asked which “head of state from which country has not set foot in his homeland in over two months?” The mockery came in the latest edition of CNN’s “The Global Public Square (GPS)” show anchored by Fareed Zakaria. In an apparent mockery of Nigeria and her President Muhammadu Buhari, CNN, on its programme displayed at 4:59pm local time on Sunday, asked,“The head of state from which country has not set foot in his homeland in over two months?” It went ahead to tick an option with the name Nigeria as the correct answer. Insecurity: Acting President, Yemi Osinbajo Orders Service Chiefs To Relocate To Maiduguri

Acting President Yemi Osinbajo last night had an emergency meeting with all the service chiefs and after the meeting, he gave a directive that the Chief of Army staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai and the Chief of Air Staff, Sadique Abubakar, should immediately relocate to Maiduguri, the Borno state capital. The meeting was called for following the increasing rate of attacks being carried out by the sect member in Borno state. Recall that some oil exploration workers and military officers were killed and some kidnapped by Boko Haram members some days ago. At the meeting, the acting president said there was need for them to be at the military command control center in the hotbed of insurgency. Google To Train 100,000 Nigerian Software Developers

The chief executive officer of Google Incorporated, Sundar Pichai, has said his firm would prepare 10 million Africans for ‘jobs of the future’ in the next five years. He said this in a company conference held in Lagos, Thursday. The pledge marked an extension of an initiative Google launched in April 2016 to train young Africans in digital skills. It announced in March it had reached its initial target of training one million people. The company said a combination of in-person and online training would be offered in Swahili, Hausa and Zulu languages. It also mentioned that at least 40 percent of people trained are women. Mr. Pichai said: “Nigerians have to write software for the local economy and we have a program to train over 100,000 software developers in Nigeria.” The company also pledged a commitment of over $20 million in the next five years for nonprofit organisations in Africa. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, former minister of finance, has been named an independent non-executive director at Standard Chartered PLC. Standard Chartered PLC is a British multinational banking and financial services company headquartered in London, England and with presence in 70 countries. According to a statement released on Thursday, by Jon Tracey, the bank’s media specialist, at the London Stock Exchange, the company said her appointment is effective from November 1, 2017. She will earn £130,000 per annum for her expertise in financial and development financing. “The independent Non-Executive Directors do not participate in any of the Group’s incentive arrangements,” the statement read. “Dr Okonjo-Iweala will receive a fee of GBP100,000 per annum for her services as an independent Non-Executive Director, with an additional fee of GBP30,000 per annum as a member of the Brand, Values and Conduct Committee. Borno Oil Prospectors Ambush Death Toll Said To Be Over 30, Many Still Unaccounted For

The death toll in Wednesday’s deadly ambush by Boko Haram in Borno State may have risen to 33, reports from the area say.  The attack came in the implementation of a 40-day “clearance” operation declared by the Chief of Army Staff, Yusuf Buratai, in which he said he wanted Boko Haram leader dead or alive. Fresh reports show that no fewer than 12 soldiers were killed while at least four out of 12 staff of the University of Maiduguri equally lost their lives.  Two of the soldiers were officers, one of them identified as Lt. M. Medawa, who was due to be decorated on Thursday as Captain, a rank to which he was recently promoted. In the ambush, some officials of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) and members of staff of the University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID) undertaking a research project concerning oil exploration in the area were abducted. FG Suspends Oil Exploration Activities In Chad Basin

The Federal government has said that it has suspended crude oil exploration in Borno State and would only resume if it gets sufficient security clearance guaranteeing the safety of its personnel and operations. Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Mr. Ibe kachikwu, also stated that it presently cannot confirm the rescue of its personnel by the military and is still awaiting confirmation from the security agencies. He further stated that the military is still collating data concerning the attack and cannot confirm the actual number of people who died.

Internet Users In Nigeria Telecommunications Networks Hit 91.6 Million In June

According to the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), the number of internet users in Nigeria’s telecommunications networks increased to 91.6 million in June. This was disclosed in its Monthly Internet Subscribers Data for June 2017. Internet users increased to 91,598,757 in June as against 91,565,010 users recorded in May 2017, showing an increase of 33,747. The data revealed that MTN had 31,691,070 subscribers browsing the internet on its network in the month of June, Globacom had 27,184,002 subscribers, Airtel had 20,174,089 subscribers and Etisalat 12,549,596 subscribers.

Amazon founder Jeff Bezos on Thursday became the world’s richest person, as a jump in the share price of the US tech giant enabled him to overtake Microsoft founder Bill Gates, Forbes magazine estimated. The magazine said its real-time tracking of personal fortunes showed Bezos with a net worth of $90.5 billion, ahead of $90 billion for Gates. Bezos owns around 17% of the equity of Amazon, which has been expanding from its original mission as an online retailer to a diversified tech firm in cloud computing, online video, computing hardware and artificial intelligence. The company also recently announced plans to acquire US grocer Whole Foods, which could help Amazon expand in that sector.
